Welcome to the Sinister Steel Motorcycle Association website! We are a group of family and friends who love to ride motorcycles in Central Jersey.  Any make or model will do.  It doesn't matter what you ride, but that you ride.  We are not a "1% club" and we are not looking for any hassles.  We just want to ride with our friends and family and meet new people along the way.

SSMA is a Promoting Charter of the American Motorcycle Association. (AMA)  We support the efforts of AMA to pursue, promote the motorcycle lifestyle and protect the rights, interests and the future of motorcycling.  We support all efforts to help make New Jersey a safer and better place to ride by raising motorcycle awareness to all motorists.

SSMA is also a proud supporter of Warrior's Watch and our nation's military heroes.  We use our motorcycles to draw attention to the cause, which is our military troops and their families.  We support the mission of our uniformed brothers and sisters and honor our veterans.  We honor our nation's warrior's here at home, and support their families while they fight for us abroad.  For more information on Warrior's Watch, click on the link on the Resource page.

SSMA also supports all efforts to Prevent Child Abuse and to Raise Child Abuse Awareness.  The Katelynn Stinnett Run is a yearly event that the group willingly attends as SILENCE IS NOT AN OPTION!  On December 3, 2008, 2-year old Katelynn Stinnett died of injuries she suffered when she was sexually abused and beaten by her 18 year old babysitter.  Thousands of bikers across the nation grieved for the loss of this baby girl. They took up a collection and paid for her burial and her headstone which is inscribed with a poem written especially for her, by a biker.  "When I look down and hear the pipes roar,I will spread my wings and with you will soar".  We vowed not to forget Katelynn and the thousands of children who suffer from child abuse every year.  Consequently, in 2009 it was decided to hold a nation wide event each year in honor of Katelynn, and to raise money to help local child abuse prevention agencies.  SSMA is honored to attend the event each year in Katelynn's honor.

We are always looking for new friends and members who share our enjoyment of riding on two wheels and riding in the wind. Email us at dshelley@sinistersteelma.com for  more information.

SSMA TO PROMOTE DRIVER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN!!

Sinister Steel Motorcycle Association is striving to make a positive impact on the motorcycling community, by supporting motorcycle safety issues and dedicating our efforts to promote Driver Awareness, to ensure the safety of our fellow riders.

We have a vision and a commitment to making motorcycling safer for all riders.  To assist us in this endeavor, we are reaching out to a diverse group of people within the motorcycling community to help us achieve our goals.  This includes the press, local and state government, insurance, law enforcement, motorcycle groups and dealers, rider education groups and many others who have an interest in motorcycle safety and driver awareness.

There are many program and groups that support Rider Education and Training, SSMA among them.  However, we would like to dedicate our efforts to promote motorcycle safety by pinpointing our focus on  DRIVER AWARENESS.  The failure of motorists to detect and recognize motorcycles in traffic is the predominating cause of motorcycle accidents.  The 1998 National Agenda for Motorcycle Safety notes that the motorcycling community can further improve its safety record simply by creating awareness of and an interest in motorcycle safety, both among riders and the wider community.  SSMA is taking on that challenge and doing our part to protect ourselves and fellow riders.

What can SSMA do to accomplish this goal?

- Improve driver’s attitudes towards motorcyclists.  We need to educate drivers to become more aware of motorcycles and to consistently consider their presence and the need to look for the presence of motorcycles. (Motorcycle conspicuity and motorist awareness programs)

-  Driver education should include a component on motorcycle awareness as a part of the auto license process.  Questions on motorcycle awareness should be included on the written test. To further enforce the message, motorcycle awareness literature should be handed to the new driver when they obtain their license at the DMV and included in the registration renewal notices. (Public information and education efforts).

- Work with Government Officials to obtain State funding for increased research to develop Motorcycle Awareness Programs that support rider education and training year round, rather than just focusing on the month of May.  (We need to determine the mechanisms for building academic and funding capacity for ongoing and future motorcycle safety research)

-Encourage the general print and internet media to provide motorcycle safety information to motorists via featured articles and provide motorcycle awareness tips to other motorists.

- Distribute motorcycle awareness literature (such as brochures,  bumper stickers, buttons, flyers) to DMV's, local driving schools, Town Halls, high schools, local grocery stores, banks and local businesses.  We plan to focus on establishments not normally associated with bikers, as we are promoting to general motorists, not ones already familiar with bikers.

- Reach out to MSF or other rider training organization to hold seminars and training sessions for members of the riding community, so riders can learn how they can help be more visible to motorists.

- Reach out to the Motor Vehicle Commission to determine what the status of the State Motorcycle Education Fund. (NJ Law 27:57-39)

- Determine how to apply for Grant Money from 2010 Federal Motorcycle Safety Programs. (Funds to be dedicated to Motorcycle Safety, Awareness and Education)

What can YOU do to help us accomplish this goal?

DONATE.  All of the above ideas are just a few of the many ways we can use to accomplish our goals, but all of them take money.    SSMA members are dedicating their time and efforts, we would appreciate it if you would support us by donating any amount you can offer.

Donations can be made by clicking on the PayPal link below or sending a check, made payable to Sinister Steel M.A., to 649 Burke Road, Jackson, NJ 08527.
